Chikungunya, dengue, West Nile virus, and Zika in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Update as of August 8, 2023.
Key Points
West Nile Virus
In late July 2023, locally acquired human cases were reported for the first time in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
As of August 8, 2023, 7 human cases had been identified in Gironde (4 confirmed cases and 3 pending confirmation); all of these cases reside in the Bordeaux metropolitan area or a nearby municipality. These cases indicate an expansion of viral circulation in France.
One indigenous equine case has also been reported in Gironde.
These cases (equine and human) are the first reported in France for the 2023 season.
Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika
From May 1 to August 4, 2023, 39 imported cases of dengue were identified, nearly half of which were in Gironde (46%). As a reminder, 30 imported cases of dengue were identified between May 1 and November 30, 2022, in the region.
To limit the emergence of local transmission chains, 71 entomological surveys (mosquito searches) and 40 vector control treatments were carried out around cases residing in or visiting the region.
