Epidemiological Situation of Seasonal Influenza in France: The onset of the influenza epidemic has been confirmed (the epidemic threshold was crossed in weeks 3 and 4).In outpatient care, the incidence rate of consultations for influenza-like illness, calculated using data from the Réseau unique, is 482 per 100,000 [95% confidence interval: 445–519], representing a very sharp increase compared to week 3. For SOS Médecins, a marked increase in consultations for influenza/influenza-like illness continues across all age groups. All regions are seeing an increase in consultations for influenza and influenza-like illness.In long-term care facilities for the elderly, 45 outbreaks of acute respiratory infections (ARI) were reported to the InVS in week 4, bringing the total number of reported outbreaks since week 40 to 274. Twenty-eight of these outbreaks were attributed to influenza, including 21 to influenza A and 3 to influenza B.In hospitals, the Oscour® network reported a 55% increase in the number of influenza-related visits compared to Week 03 and a 43% increase in the number of hospitalizations. In Week 04, 79 severe cases were reported to the InVS, bringing the total number of severe cases reported since November 1, 2014, to 223.The majority of influenza viruses in France are of the A(H3N2) type. These influenza viruses are known to cause complications in at-risk individuals. Vaccination coverage among at-risk populations is insufficient, and the vaccine’s efficacy remains to be evaluated. The vaccine remains the best preventive tool, even though its effectiveness against A(H3N2) is likely not optimal. Since early January, mortality has exceeded expected levels. This excess mortality from all causes primarily affects people aged 85 and older. The proportion of these deaths attributable to influenza is unknown.
