Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of August 20, 2015.

Mortality: Mortality rates observed in late July and early August are fluctuating around the levels expected for this time of year.

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations: According to available data, emergency room activity for children under 1 year of age remains close to the alert threshold. Emergency room activity for those aged 75 and older remains in line with expectations.

Chikungunya and dengue: enhanced surveillance in Gironde and Lot-et-GaronneSince May 1, 80 suspected cases have been reported. Among them, 1 imported case of dengue and 3 imported cases of chikungunya have been confirmed. In total, as of August 14, in the 20 metropolitan departments subject to enhanced surveillance, 486 suspected cases have been reported. Among them, 44 imported cases of dengue and 16 imported cases of chikungunya have been confirmed. There are no locally acquired cases.

Notifiable Diseases (ND) No unusual situation this week.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AG) Activity is slightly up in Aquitaine, in line with expected values for this time of year. Nationally, activity is on the rise, with values comparable to previous years.

Asthma and AllergiesIn Aquitaine, as in France, an increase in allergy activity has been observed, primarily affecting children. Asthma activity in Aquitaine remains relatively stable compared to the previous week. Forecast for this week: very low to low pollen allergy risk for grass pollen in the region.

Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: The number of cases of enterovirus 4 (Oscour®) meningitis is declining.

Heat-related illnessesIn Aquitaine, there was a decrease in calls to SOS Médecins in Week 33 of 2015, with 0.3% of total SOS Médecins activity related to heat (compared to 0.4% in Week 32). There was an increase in emergency room visits, accounting for 0.5% of total activity in the Oscour® network. No heat wave is forecast by Météo France as of August 20, 2015.
