Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of September 18, 2014.

Mortality: The number of deaths (all ages and those aged 75 and older) is in line with expected levels for this time of year.

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency room visits by people aged 75 and older and those under 1 year of age remain within expected ranges for this time of year.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situations were observed during the month of September.

Chikungunya and dengue: enhanced surveillance Since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde—where the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is established—125 suspected cases have been reported.Among these, 53 cases of chikungunya, 25 cases of dengue, and 2 co-infections have been confirmed, all of which were imported. As of September 11, 2014, two cases of autochthonous dengue were identified in the Var department, with no epidemiological link due to different serotypes.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE)Moderate activity, in line with expectations, in Aquitaine. Slight increase in SOS Médecins consultations for AGE at the national level.

Asthma and Allergies: A slight increase in emergency care visits for allergies and a continued rise in asthma cases in Aquitaine and France, according to SOS Médecins and Oscour®. Note that this increase in asthma activity is observed every year during the two weeks following the start of the school year. Forecast: moderate allergy risk in Aquitaine.

Enterovirus meningitis: The virus has been circulating since week 26 in Aquitaine, according to Oscour® and the virology department at Bordeaux University Hospital.

Mushroom poisoning (indicator not detailed in the body of the document)Since July, in Aquitaine, 19 cases according to CAPTV and 2 according to Oscour® (439 and 186 in France).
