Public Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of September 14, 2017.

Key Points

Mortality: Mortality during week 35 (August 28 to September 3, 2017) is close to expected levels for this period across all age groups. The trend is the same at the national level.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency department activity among people aged 75 and older and among children under 1 year of age is below expected levels.

Virology: The number of positive respiratory virus samples from the laboratories at the Bordeaux, Poitiers, and Limoges university hospitals decreased in week 36 (14 positive samples). At the Poitiers and Bordeaux university hospitals, the majority were rhinovirus/enterovirus (5 and 4 samples, respectively). No samples tested positive at the Limoges university hospital.

Notifiable Diseases (ND): 10 cases of hepatitis A diagnosed in week 35 and 5 cases diagnosed in week 36 (provisional data). Sporadic cases of measles since week 35 in the Gironde department.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced surveillance in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: since May 1, the start of enhanced surveillance in the region’s departments colonized by Aedes albopictus (depts. 24, 33, 40, 47, and 64), 56 suspected cases have been reported. In total, 7 cases of dengue and 3 imported cases of Zika have been confirmed.

Asthma: A sharp increase in activity among children under 15 in connection with the start of the school year, as observed every year. Asthma cases account for 2.9% (60 visits vs. 29 in week 35) and 3.2% (141 visits vs. 75 in week 35) of total activity at SOS Médecins and the Oscour® network, respectively, among children under 15.
