End of the Flu Epidemic – Preliminary Report in Poitou-CharentesIn Poitou-Charentes, the epidemic began in week 01-2015 with an increase in all surveillance indicators (hospital emergency rooms and SOS Médecins 17). The peak was reached in week 07-2014. During the peak week, the number of consultations at SOS Médecins 17 reached 135, and the number of emergency room visits was 160, of which 28 resulted in hospitalization. The levels reached were significantly higher than in the previous 2013–2014 season.Since the start of surveillance, 49 outbreaks of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in long-term care facilities for the elderly have been reported. Among the closed outbreaks (26), the median attack rates were 27% among residents and 7% among staff. Forty-three residents were hospitalized and twenty-four died. Among the facilities that responded, median influenza vaccination coverage was 87.5% among residents and 21% among staff. For 12 outbreaks, influenza was identified as the cause.During the winter of 2014–2015, surveillance of severe cases conducted by the InVS in the Poitou-Charentes region, in collaboration with intensive care units, identified 38 severe cases. Five deaths occurred. The number of severe cases reported this winter is higher than that of the previous flu season (20 cases).
