Headlines - Use of antiviral drugs in outpatient settings during the seasonal flu season: publication of an opinion by the High Council for Public Health

Antiviral drugs (neuraminidase inhibitors) have demonstrated efficacy as a curative treatment in reducing the risk of hospitalization in cases of seasonal influenza affecting individuals at risk of complications. However, there is a risk of developing resistance, and recent data suggest that these antiviral drugs should be used judiciously.

During periods of seasonal influenza virus circulation, the HCSP therefore recommends targeted use of antivirals in the general population and in communities of at-risk individuals, both for curative treatment and for post-exposure prophylaxis.

Since treatment efficacy is linked to how early it is administered, treatment must be initiated as soon as possible, without waiting for the results of the virological confirmation test if one has been performed.

The HCSP also reiterates the importance of seasonal influenza vaccination for populations targeted by the recommendations of the current vaccination schedule.

The HCSP does not recommend the use of antivirals for curative or post-exposure treatment in individuals without risk factors for severe influenza complications.
