Tuberculosis

  • Increase in the number of reported cases in 2023 in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (+17% compared to 2022), as in mainland France.

  • Disparities between departments, with higher reporting rates (>5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) in Haute-Vienne, Gironde, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Deux-Sèvres, and Vienne in 2023.

  • A particularly marked increase in the reporting rate among 15- to 24-year-olds in 2023.

  • Continued increase in the reporting rate among people born abroad, particularly among those born in sub-Saharan Africa.

  • Nearly three-quarters of cases presented with a pulmonary form, as in previous years.

  • Increase in cases detected through screening in 2023.

Treatment Outcomes

  • Information on treatment outcomes was available for less than half of the cases reported in the region in 2022, a decrease from the previous year.

  • Of these cases, 80% had completed treatment, a proportion that remains below the World Health Organization (WHO) target of 90%.

Latent Tuberculosis Infections (LTIs)

  • The number of reported LTI cases among those under 18 continued to rise in 2023 in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (+11% compared to 2022).

  • About one-third of reported LTI cases resided in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.

  • Case characteristics remained unchanged from previous years: the majority were young men aged 15 to 18, born abroad, living in group settings.
