Perceived health status of residents living near a chemical industrial complex: Salindres

To assess the range of health complaints reported by residents living near a chemical industrial complex in Salindres, Gard (France), an epidemiological study focuses on indicators of perceived health. The objective is to compare the perceived health status of this population with that of the national general population, which serves as a reference group. The cross-sectional study was conducted via computer-assisted telephone interviews with a random sample of adults living near the industrial complex (n = 1,495; 52.6% response rate). Indicators of perceived health were measured using the SF-36 MOS and the SCL-90-R (anxiety dimension). Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies’ (INSEE) Decennial Health Survey and the Institute for Research and Documentation in Health Economics’ (IRDES) Survey on Health and Social Protection (ESPS) were used to make comparisons, after adjusting for age and sex. The study population reports better perceived health than the general French population, according to data from the 2003 INSEE survey, regardless of the scores considered (p < 0.001). For the dimension related to mental distress (MH), a comparison with data from the 2008 ESPS survey confirms this observation. These comparisons show that residents living near the platform rate their health more favorably than the rest of the French population. These results suggest the influence of regional disparities associated with socioeconomic inequalities, which are likely to have a greater impact on perceived health than proximity to the platform. These two instruments confirm their ability to measure perceived health among residents living near a polluted site, based on their metric properties examined in this study. However, in order to make robust comparisons between locally measured perceived health data and data from the general population, it is necessary to have, at the national level, data that is both recent and controlled for sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors.
