Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of August 1, 2013.

Key Points - Assessment of the Public Health Situation as of August 1

  • At the regional level, an increase in the number of emergency room visits was observed during week 2013-30 (approximately +16% compared to the average of the previous three years). This trend has not resulted in an increase in hospitalizations. All age groups appear to be affected. Proportional to the increase in activity, no medical conditions have been identified so far that are more frequent than usual for this time of year and in a context of extreme heat.

  • Analysis of diagnoses shows a moderate increase in the number of diagnoses of malaise and heat-related conditions (heatstroke, dehydration, hyponatremia). However, the observed figures remain within expected ranges given current temperatures. This trend is also observed in data reported by SOS Médecins (heatstroke diagnoses).

  • Gastroenteritis: visits to emergency departments are stable and at their baseline level, and visits to SOS Médecins clinics, although slightly down compared to last week, remain slightly above the level typically observed at this time of year.
