Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of January 22, 2015.

Key Points

  • Influenza: In the Languedoc-Roussillon region, there has been a sharp increase in the use of SOS Médecins and emergency departments for influenza-like illnesses, with current figures from these two data sources being similar to those of the two previous epidemic seasons. The same trend is observed at the national level, and the Inserm Sentinelles network confirms these findings, with the incidence rate of outpatient visits for flu-like symptoms exceeding the national epidemic threshold.

  • Bronchiolitis: Emergency department visits, while stable, remain at a high level, indicating that the epidemic is not yet over in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. However, there is a clear decrease in the hospitalization rate. Nationally, the epidemic continues to subside, whether considering emergency department or primary care data.

  • Gastroenteritis: Emergency room visits in the Languedoc-Roussillon region are high and exceed levels observed during the same weeks in the previous two years. In community settings, data from SOS Médecins and the Sentinelles network show a downward trend, although the incidence rate has not yet fallen below the epidemic threshold. The number of gastroenteritis episodes in nursing homes is also higher than last season.

  • Pneumonia: a clear downward trend in pneumonia diagnoses made in emergency departments, though the figures remain higher than those of the previous two years for equivalent weeks.
