Key Findings from the Midi-Pyrénées Regional Health Agency - Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Number of confirmed or probable fatal cases in France - Data updated as of July 31, 2012
A total of 27 confirmed or probable cases of vCJD (variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) have been identified in France since 1996. To date, all but the last two cases reported in 2012 have died. These 27 cases of vCJD have the following characteristics: they include 12 men and 15 women, with a median age at death or diagnosis of 36 years (ranging from 19 to 58 years). Among them, 8 people resided in the Île-de-France region and 19 in other regions. For the 25 vCJD cases who died, deaths occurred in 1996 (1 case), 2000 (1 case), 2001 (1 case), 2002 (3 cases), 2004 (2 cases), 2005 (6 cases), 2006 (6 cases), 2007 (3 cases), and 2009 (2 cases).All cases identified to date were homozygous Met-Met for codon 129 of the prion protein gene (PRNP) and had no identified risk factors for other recognized forms of CJD. One case had visited the United Kingdom very regularly for about ten years starting in 1987.
