Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of December 19, 2014.
Monitoring of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning (Bulletin of December 16, 2014)Since September 1, 2014, 346 cases have been reported to the national surveillance system. A total of 1,312 people were affected, of whom 769 were treated by a hospital emergency department and 146 were referred to a hospital hyperbaric medicine unit. Twelve deaths due to accidental poisoning were reported. The numbers are lower than in 2013, as during the same period, 511 reports were filed involving 1,588 people, of whom 1,114 were transported to a hospital emergency department. Over the past two weeks, 77 reports were filed involving 393 people, of whom 179 were transported to a hospital emergency department. During the same weeks in 2013, 100 reports were submitted to the surveillance system (313 exposed individuals, 195 of whom were transported to a hospital emergency department). In Midi-Pyrénées, 6 reports have been submitted to the surveillance system since September 1, involving 20 people.Ebola Virus – Epidemiological Update in West Africa as of December 15, 2014 As of December 15, the WHO reported a total of 18,472 cases (suspected, probable, or confirmed) and 6,847 deaths in the four affected countries in West Africa (Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Mali). Information on the latest subnational trends dates from December 10 for the three most affected countries (date of publication of the latest detailed WHO report). The three most affected countries (Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone) report new cases distributed very unevenly across districts. At the national level, transmission is most intense in Sierra Leone, the country reporting the highest number of cases since the start of the epidemic (N=8,069). In Liberia, the number of new cases is decreasing, with all cases reported in 5 of the country’s 15 districts. In Guinea, the number of new cases has been generally stable for several weeks, though this stability masks a highly varied situation across districts.
