Identification of spatio-temporal clusters of glioblastomas and hypothyroidism in the municipalities of Salindres and Rousson (Gard)

Concerns have been raised by residents and organizations regarding the health and environmental impacts of industrial facilities in Salindres, in the Gard department. A study on quality of life and self-reported health was launched in late 2012 by Santé publique France and the Occitanie Regional Health Agency (ARS). The results highlighted health concerns regarding potential excess incidences of diseases, particularly glioblastomas (primary brain tumors) and thyroid disorders. They revealed the significance of industrial nuisances and their impact on perceived health. Investigations were conducted to look for a possible excess incidence of glioblastomas and hypothyroidism. Several data sources were utilized: the National Histological Registry of Primary Tumors of the Central Nervous System (RnhTPSNC), and Sniiram (Health Insurance Information System). Occupational exposures were studied. The results do not confirm the impression of a local excess incidence of hypothyroidism. Regarding glioblastomas, they allow for an estimated average incidence rate in the Gard department from 2006 to 2010 that is consistent with French and international literature. Local variations in incidence are observed, but the rarity of the disease, the small sample size, and the limited observation period make interpretation at a very fine geographical level difficult. The absence of recognized environmental or occupational factors for glioblastomas does not support a link between local or temporal fluctuations and a specific industrial facility. A follow-up study covering an additional five-year period is currently underway to monitor how the situation evolves.
