Fourteen cases of shigellosis confirmed by stool culture were reported in the Aude department between June 5 and July 5, 2004. Eight of these patients lived in the same municipality, and the first six cases occurred between June 5 and 8. The majority of the patients were children aged 4 to 14. An investigation into a common exposure among the first six cases led to suspicion that the patients had consumed water from a fountain. Analysis of the water in question did not detect Shigella, but pathogens indicative of fecal contamination were found. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of early reporting of clusters of shigellosis cases to the DDASS, as well as the need to enforce recommendations against consuming water not authorized for human consumption.
