Chido in Mayotte. Bulletin of February 6, 2025.

Key Points

  • At the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM), the number of emergency room visits was again slightly lower in week 2025-S05 (January 27 to February 2). This downward trend should be viewed with caution and will need to be confirmed in the coming weeks. Wounds and trauma remained the primary reasons for emergency room visits.

  • In week 2025-S05, the ESCRIM recorded an average of 90 visits per day (down from previous weeks). For the first time since late December, visits for acute diarrhea were more frequent than those for wounds or trauma, which were sharply declining.

  • In referral medical centers (CMRs), the main reasons for visits in week 2025-S05 were gastrointestinal symptoms, injuries, and respiratory conditions.

  • The positivity rate of respiratory specimens for influenza viruses has been above or close to 10% since mid-December, indicating an ongoing epidemic in the territory.

  • Mayotte entered the bronchiolitis epidemic phase in 2024-S49, prior to the passage of Cyclone Chido. The positivity rate of samples for RSV has remained relatively stable over the past three weeks.

  • In week 2025-S05, the percentage of sales of anti-diarrheal medications and oral rehydration solutions (ORS) remained at a very high level in sentinel pharmacies, reaching approximately 7%.

  • Regarding acute gastroenteritis, the rate of samples testing positive for at least one enteric pathogen has remained relatively stable at a high level since late December (approximately 84% in 2025-S05).

  • The destruction of infrastructure and limited access to drinking water increase the risk of waterborne diseases (cholera, typhoid fever, rotavirus gastroenteritis), leptospirosis, as well as respiratory infections such as bronchiolitis.
