Chido in Mayotte. Bulletin of January 15, 2025.
Key Points
The passage of Tropical Storm Dikeledi over Mayotte on January 11 and 12, 2025, disrupted access to care and the collection of surveillance data during those two days. The ESCRIM field hospital and the health clinic were dismantled on January 10 in anticipation of the storm’s arrival.
At the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM), nearly 5,000 emergency room visits were reported from December 14, 2024, to January 12, 2025. More than half of the cases recorded during the health reserve’s deployment were related to wounds and trauma and digestive symptoms. In week 2025-S02 (January 6–12), an upward trend in the proportion of visits for digestive disorders was observed (no data available for January 8 and 9).
As of January 9, 2025, 3,216 visits to the ESCRIM hospital (established on December 24) and 1,243 visits to the clinic (established as a backup on December 29) were reported. Nearly one-third (30%) of visits to ESCRIM were related to trauma. In week 2025-S02 (January 6–12), most visits to ESCRIM (69%) were coded as unrelated to Cyclone Chido (no data available for January 10–12).
In week 2025-S02 (January 6–12), most visits to medical referral centers (CMR) and associated centers remained related to wounds and trauma and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Following the sharp increase observed in late December, the positivity rate for influenza virus samples remained relatively stable in early January. In week 2025-S02 (January 6–12), influenza viruses became the most commonly identified viruses, ahead of rhinoviruses. Transition to the pre-epidemic phase for influenza in 2025-S01 and an ongoing bronchiolitis epidemic.
The destruction of infrastructure and limited access to drinking water increase the risk of waterborne diseases (typhoid, cholera, rotavirus gastroenteritis), leptospirosis, as well as respiratory infections such as bronchiolitis.
