Chido in Mayotte. Bulletin of January 23, 2025.
Key Points
At the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM), the emergency department recorded a slight increase in visits during week 2025-S03 (January 13–19) (1,071 compared to 949 in week 2025-S02), with 87 hospitalizations and 5 deaths among adults aged 50 and older. The main reasons for visiting the emergency department were wounds and trauma and gastrointestinal symptoms. In week 2025-S03, the decline in the proportion of visits for wounds and trauma continued.
In week 2025-S03, the ESCRIM recorded an average of 122 patients per day (January 16–19) compared to 203 in 2025-S02 (January 6–9), with a decrease in trauma cases (25%) and an increase in visits for diarrhea (14%).Visits related to Cyclone Chido accounted for 21% of consultations.
Following the sharp increase observed in late December, the positivity rate for influenza virus samples remained relatively stable in early January; in week 2025-S03 (January 13–19), a slight decrease was observed. Rhinoviruses again accounted for the largest share of positive samples. Transition to the pre-epidemic phase for influenza in 2025-S01 and an ongoing bronchiolitis epidemic.
Regarding surveillance of viruses associated with acute gastroenteritis, the rate of samples positive for at least one pathogen remained relatively stable at a high level over the past 3 weeks (84% in 2025-S03).
The destruction of infrastructure and limited access to drinking water increase the risk of waterborne diseases (cholera, typhoid fever, rotavirus gastroenteritis), leptospirosis, as well as respiratory infections such as bronchiolitis.
