Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of April 30, 2019.

Key Points

  • In weeks 15 and 16, more than 5,600 clinically suggestive cases (3,243 and 2,381, respectively), bringing the total to more than 22,000 since the beginning of the year

  • More than 1,000 confirmed cases reported per week (1,116 cases in Week 15), bringing the total number of confirmed cases since the start of the year to more than 7,700

  • The spread of cases is significant: all municipalities have reported cases.

  • Cases reported in the municipalities of St. Joseph, St. Pierre, and Le Tampon continue to rise despite the fact that outbreaks in the south remain very active

  • An increase in cases is observed in the north, east, and west (St. Denis, St. Suzanne, St. André, St. Paul, and La Possession) as well as in L’Entre-Deux and St. Philippe

  • Local transmission of the DENV1 serotype has been detected in Petite Ile (14 cases)

  • Eight deaths were reported in 2019. Following investigations, four were considered directly linked to dengue and four indirectly linked.

  • In this context, vigilance is warranted regarding differential diagnoses (leptospirosis, measles, and Rift Valley fever)
