Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of December 23, 2015.
Epidemiological Situation
The occurrence of three locally acquired cases of dengue fever among residents of the municipality of Saint-Joseph has revealed the establishment of a local transmission chain in that municipality. Since no imported cases have been identified in the area, the origin of this chain remains unknown at this time. As the dengue virus continues to circulate in the Indian Ocean region (sporadic cases in Mauritius, circulation in India) and major outbreaks are occurring in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc.), the risk of the virus being imported upon return from vacation is significant. During this southern hemisphere summer, when weather conditions are favorable for the proliferation of mosquito vectors, healthcare professionals must remain vigilant, and travelers with a fever upon returning from a country where dengue is endemic should consult a doctor immediately.
