Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of June 25, 2019.

Key Points

  • In Week 24, there was a sharp decline in the number of clinically suggestive cases compared to Week 23 (856 and 1,845, respectively); more than 46,000 clinically suggestive cases have been reported since the beginning of 2019.

  • The number of confirmed cases is declining (Week 23 = 356 and Week 24 = 273, unconsolidated data). Nearly 17,000 cases have been confirmed since the beginning of 2019.

  • However, nearly all of the island’s municipalities remain affected by viral circulation.

  • Activity in the historic hotspots in the south continues to decline, except in St. Joseph, Entre-Deux, and Petite-Île (stable). St. Pierre remains the largest hotspot (20% of cases).

  • The municipalities to monitor are those in the west, north, and east.

  • There are more areas where the DENV1 serotype is circulating among locally acquired cases (the southern part of the island, St. Denis, and St. Denis).

  • Vigilance remains essential regarding differential diagnoses (leptospirosis, measles, and Rift Valley fever).
