Influenza Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of November 30, 2017.
Epidemiological Situation
The seasonal flu epidemic, which began late this year in August, was severe. It peaked in early October. Since then, influenza activity has declined sharply in emergency departments and primary care settings and is approaching the usual baseline levels for this time of year. Since the beginning of the year, the number of severe influenza cases hospitalized in intensive care (mostly at high risk of complications and unvaccinated) has been well above the peaks observed during the 2010–2015 period.Although its prevalence is declining, influenza B has been the predominant virus circulating, along with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and non-H1N1 influenza A (including the A(H3N2) subtype). An influenza epidemic is currently underway in Mayotte (See: PE Cire OI No. 60). In mainland France and Europe, although influenza activity is at baseline levels, a seasonal resurgence is expected in the coming weeks. In this context, it is important to remind the public of measures to prevent the transmission of influenza (barrier measures) and the option of vaccination, particularly for those planning to travel to areas experiencing an epidemic.
