Leptospirosis Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of February 13, 2015.

Epidemiological Situation

The number of cases in 2014 is similar to that of 2013. However, for the first time, an increase in cases following a cyclone has been clearly demonstrated. After a weather-related event (cyclone, flooding, etc.), it is important for the public to protect themselves during cleanup or restoration work by wearing gloves, boots, and long clothing. Over the past two years, the proportion of cases linked to water-based recreational activities has been steadily increasing, even though recreational or professional agricultural activities (livestock farming, market gardening, gardening) continue to account for the largest number of leptospirosis cases. If clinical symptoms develop after engaging in these high-risk activities, you should consult your doctor and inform them of the high-risk activity.
