Leptospirosis Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of March 16, 2023.
Key Points
Seasonal resurgence of leptospirosis, linked to the rainy season. This time of year is particularly conducive to soil runoff, which causes the spread of leptospires in the environment. It also presents temperature and humidity conditions favorable to the survival of the bacteria in water and wet environments.
26 cases reported to the ARS as of March 12, 2023 (compared to 36 as of March 12, 2022).
Given the recent heavy rains, an increase in the number of cases is expected over the coming weeks.
Guidance on how to proceed (biological confirmation and reporting of cases for investigation and management), as well as the option to consult an infectious disease specialist, is available on page 4.
