In Réunion, indigenous malaria was eliminated in 1979. Since then, imported cases have been reported each year, with a marked decline since 2011 following measures implemented in neighboring countries. In 2016, there were 12 cases of imported malaria. In 2017, 22 imported cases were reported.However, malaria remains endemic in several neighboring countries in the Indian Ocean region with which there is significant travel and trade (including Madagascar and the Union of the Comoros). At this stage, although indigenous transmission from an imported case cannot be completely ruled out, this possibility remains limited given the very localized presence of a competent vector (A. arabiensis). Regarding malaria in Réunion, priorities focus on effective prevention during travel to endemic areas (repellent use AND appropriate chemoprophylaxis) and on rapid diagnosis upon return from a malaria-endemic area.
