Measles Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of June 18, 2019.

Key Points

Epidemiological situation: viral circulation, particularly in the north and south of the island.
Since early April, new cases have been reported, particularly in the north and then in the south of the island: 28 cases are subject to mandatory reporting (MR), of which 24 have been biologically confirmed. An outbreak has been identified in a daycare center.
In week 23 of 2019, 8 cases were reported. Six additional cases have been reported but have not yet been subject to mandatory reporting. New cases are expected.

Importance of verifying vaccination status and administering a two-dose catch-up series for eligible individuals who are unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated (general population and healthcare workers). Vaccination plays a role in both individual and collective protection—protecting those who cannot be vaccinated, such as children under 12 months of age.

Any clinically suspected case of measles must be reported to the ARS as soon as possible, even before biological confirmation is obtained. A delay in reporting leads to a delay in implementing measures to interrupt transmission.
