Public Health Bulletin: Vaccination in Réunion. May 2019.

Key Points

Vaccination rates are increasing among infants born since January 1, 2018, to whom the expanded vaccination mandate applies. To quantify the impact of the mandatory vaccination requirement, vaccination coverage at 7 months of age for infants born between January and May 2018 was compared with that of infants born between January and May 2017, for vaccinations against pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type b, hepatitis B, pneumococcus, and meningococcus C. In Réunion, the gains are: +36.4 percentage points in vaccination coverage for the first dose of the meningococcal C vaccine (vaccination coverage in 2018: 75.7%; 2017: 39.3%) + 1.9 percentage points for the use of the hexavalent vaccine, including the hepatitis B vaccine, for infants vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, and polio (usage rate in 2018: 99.4%; 2017: 97.5%) + 2 percentage points of vaccination coverage for the first dose of the pneumococcal vaccine (vaccination coverage in 2018: 99.6%; in 2017: 97.6%); despite this, the "3-dose" vaccination coverage remained stable in 2017 in Réunion and below the 95% target.

Vaccination coverage is also increasing among children born before the law took effect: a 41.6-point increase in vaccination coverage for meningococcal C among 7-month-old infants in the 2018 cohort (56.1%) compared to those in the 2017 cohort (14.5%).

The "meningococcal C 2-dose" vaccination coverage among 2-year-olds in Réunion is insufficient (67%) and one of the lowest in France.

The "MMR 2-dose" vaccination coverage remained stable in 2018 but is insufficient to prevent the circulation of the virus (<95%).

HPV vaccination coverage, which was very low (8.1% for 2 doses) in 2018, remained unchanged from 2017.
