Status of Acute Gastroenteritis in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of August 29, 2014.

Analysis of the Epidemiological Situation

An increase in cases of gastroenteritis has been observed in Mayotte since early August. This increase, evident in hospital emergency rooms and private practices, particularly affects young children, some of whom have had to be hospitalized for dehydration. At the same time, an increase in sales of anti-diarrheal medications at sentinel pharmacies has also been observed. Laboratory testing is currently underway at the CHM to identify the infectious agent responsible for this outbreak. Initial reports from private practitioners and health clinics suggest a viral cause, but laboratory results are needed to confirm this hypothesis.
