Status of Acute Gastroenteritis in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of September 19, 2014.
Analysis of the Epidemiological Situation
An outbreak of gastroenteritis has been observed in Mayotte since early August. The peak was reached in week 33 (Monday, August 11, through Sunday, August 17) in terms of the number of visits by children under 5 to doctors in the sentinel network, and in terms of the number of visits by all age groups to the CHM Emergency Department. It became apparent two weeks later at pharmacies in the sentinel network. To date, various indicators show a decline in circulation but remain at levels above the usual background noise. Initial confirmations conducted at the CHM laboratory identified rotavirus. However, additional analyses are currently underway, notably at the National Reference Center for Enteric Viruses, to characterize the infectious agent responsible for this outbreak.
