Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of December 15, 2023.

Key points

Bronchiolitis

  • The peak of the bronchiolitis outbreak among children under 2 years of age appears to have been reached in the region (outbreak began in S41). All health indicators (data from SOS Médecins, emergency department visits, hospitalizations for bronchiolitis among all hospitalizations following emergency department visits, and RSV isolations by the Nantes and Angers university hospitals) were decreasing in week 49, though they remained at high levels.

COVID-19

  • Syndromic surveillance indicators (SOS Médecins cases and emergency department visits) and virological surveillance indicators (incidence rate and positivity rate) were all increasing in Week 49, at a moderate level (an increase observed since Week 46). As a reminder, since July 1, 2023, only PCR-confirmed cases have been reported.

Influenza

  • The region entered the pre-epidemic phase for influenza in week 49, with an increase in all health indicators: a moderate increase in SOS Médecins calls for flu-like symptoms, an increase in emergency room visits (though remaining at a low level), and an increase in influenza virus isolates identified by the virology laboratories at the Nantes and Angers university hospitals (influenza A). In mainland France, only the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region entered the epidemic phase of influenza in week 49.

Acute gastroenteritis

  • Healthcare utilization for acute gastroenteritis was at a low level in week 49.

Pneumonia

  • Emergency department visits and SOS Médecins consultations for pneumonia (all types combined) stabilized at a high level across all age groups in week 49. The levels reached were significantly higher than in the previous two years, particularly among 5- to 14-year-olds.
