Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of January 20, 2016.

Over the past week in the region:

  • The number of bronchiolitis cases seen in the emergency department at Nantes University Hospital and at SOS Médecins clinics continued to decline, falling below the thresholds for the first week. This decrease was also observed in the number of emergency department visits by infants under 1 year of age (below the threshold).

  • Influenza viruses remain rare. Nationally, influenza B viruses predominate among influenza cases seen in primary care. Influenza-like illnesses remain well below the epidemic threshold. However, the first case of severe influenza has just been reported by an intensive care unit in the region.

  • An increase in gastroenteritis cases seen by SOS Médecins has begun, but remains below the epidemic threshold. The number of clusters of gastroenteritis cases in long-term care facilities is on the rise. Nationally, the new norovirus genotype (GII.17) is becoming dominant over the older GII.4 virus. This new genotype was responsible for major outbreaks in China and Japan in 2014–15.
