Public Health Bulletin on Tuberculosis in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region. November 2022.
Key Points
The annual reporting rate was 5.4 reported cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2020, lower than the national rate (6.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and slightly higher than the average rate for metropolitan regions outside the Île-de-France region (5.0 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). Following a peak in reported cases in 2018, the annual reported rate stabilized between 2019 and 2020, at 5.5 and 5.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively, unlike other regions where a sharp decline was observed in 2020.
The reported rate was nearly twice as high among men as among women in 2020, as in previous years.
Over the 2010–2020 period, annual reporting rates per 100,000 inhabitants declined among those under 15 and those over 60. Among those aged 15–39, an increase in reporting rates was observed starting in 2015–2016.
The reporting rate among people born abroad was generally declining from 2010 to 2020, apart from a peak in 2018 and 2019. This downward trend differed from other metropolitan regions, where a steady increase in reporting rates among people born abroad was observed between 2010 and 2020.
As at the national level, the reporting rate declined steadily among cases born in France, falling from 3.5 in 2010 to 1.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2020.
In 2020, the highest standardized case rates per 100,000 inhabitants were observed in the Alpes-Maritimes (7.0), the Bouches-du-Rhône (5.7), and the Vaucluse (5.0). The Var department and the Alpine departments had lower rates, below 4.
The percentage of cases reported in the 2015–2018 period with treatment completed 12 months after diagnosis of active tuberculosis was 69%, significantly below the WHO target of achieving a 90% cure rate.
The number of cases of MDR (multidrug-resistant, i.e., resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin) or RR (rifampicin-resistant) tuberculosis reported in PACA remains low: 2 cases were diagnosed in 2020, representing 0.7% of all cases.
