Gonococcal Infections in 2001–2003. Data from the Renago Network. National Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, 2001–2003
Key points: - After two years of decline, the number of gonococcal strains isolated by the Renago network is on the rise and has returned to 2000 levels. - This increase affects both sexes, the Ile-de-France region, and other regions. - The trend in gonococcal infections over the past three years is identical to that observed in the Sentinelles network of general practitioners. - The resistance rate of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains to ciprofloxacin is rising sharply and reached 14.7% of the strains analyzed in 2001–2003, with 10% of these having an MIC for ciprofloxacin greater than 1 mg/L. All strains remain susceptible to ceftriaxone. (R.A.)
