Measles Epidemiological Bulletin. Surveillance data as of July 3, 2019

Key Points

  • Since January 1, 2019, 1,938 cases of measles have been reported (vs. 2,572 cases during the same period in 2018), of which 566 (29%) were hospitalized (27 in intensive care), 138 cases (7%) complicated by pneumonia, and 2 cases of encephalitis, including 1 death (subacute encephalitis in an immunocompromised patient).

  • Measles virus circulation remains active, with 117 cases (on average) during weeks S18 through S25, compared to 77 cases (on average) during the previous 8 weeks.

  • 86 departments reported at least 1 case during the period.

  • 87% of cases occurred in unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated individuals (out of a total of 1,367 cases, aged over one year and born since 1980, for whom vaccination status was known).

  • The occurrence of nosocomial cluster cases underscores the importance of keeping healthcare workers’ vaccination statuses up to date.
