Because young girls are apprehensive about their first gynecological visit, the Sparadrap Association—with support from the Adosen Association, MGEN Health Prevention, and Santé publique France—has produced a 20-page illustrated brochure to help take the fear out of this visit and encourage teenage girls to communicate with healthcare professionals. The brochure is aimed at young women aged 14 to 20 and addresses their main questions about what to expect during a gynecological exam. In particular, it explains that confidentiality is respected and that, except under specific circumstances (pain, symptoms, or the young woman’s request), a gynecological exam is not necessary during the first appointment. Designed to best prepare young women and help them establish a relationship of trust that will facilitate better gynecological care, the brochure aims to reassure them without trivializing or underestimating their difficulties in discussing intimate matters with a professional, undressing, and being examined. This document can be presented or distributed as part of: a sex education program in a school setting; an individual consultation; or a group information session (family planning clinic, family planning center, school health office, youth center, adolescent clinic); or during a consultation (general practitioner, gynecologist, midwife).
