Key Points
Nationally, the number of deaths among people aged 65 and older, based on civil registry data (INSEE), was elevated in weeks 27 through 32.
The rise in mortality began mainly in Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in week 27, spreading to a large part of mainland France. The excesses were more pronounced on the western coast in week 28 and in the east in week 29.
The rise in mortality coincides with the heatwave and high temperatures that have affected mainland France since July 13.
