Summary
In Week 51 (December 16–22), total emergency department activity rose slightly among children under 2 years of age (+4.6%; +1,319 visits) and people aged 75 and older (+3.7%, or +1,827 visits). Hospitalizations following emergency department visits remained stable or declined across all age groups.
Over the past week, notable increases were observed for:
respiratory conditions: influenza/flu-like illness (+61%, or +467 visits, including 301 among children under 15) and bronchitis among 2- to 14-year-olds (+13.5%, or +56 visits) and, to a lesser extent, among adults (+5.5%, or +88 visits);
gastroenteritis in all age groups except children under 2 years of age (+10%, or 451 visits across all ages);
isolated fever among 2- to 14-year-olds (+15%, or +230 visits), allergies and conjunctivitis among adults and children under 2 years of age (respectively +15.5% and +6.7% across all ages, or +94 and +256 visits) and ENT conditions in all age groups except among children under 2 years of age (+11.9% across all ages, or +1,076 visits)
Visits for bronchiolitis stabilized in week 51.
Among the most common conditions, notable increases include abdominal pain in children under 2 years of age (+14%), urinary tract infections in those aged 15–74 (+5%), and in those aged 75 and older: cardiac decompensation (+6.3%) and dyspnea, respiratory failure (+4.8%).
