Summary

In Week 21 (May 24–30, 2021), the number of visits and hospitalizations following visits increased among children aged 2–14 (+7%, or +4,227 visits, and +8%, or +401 hospitalizations) and remained stable in other age groups. Visits for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups and their share of total activity have declined for the seventh consecutive week (3,266 vs. 4,021 visits in Week 20, a decrease of 19%, and 1.1% vs. 1.4% in Week 20). This decline applies to all age groups. The proportion of hospitalizations following visits across all age groups is slightly down (50% vs. 52% in Week 20). At the regional level, visits for suspected COVID-19 are down in all metropolitan regions and in the overseas departments, except in Réunion (+25%, or +23 visits). Since the start of surveillance on February 24, 2020, 494,184 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded. Among other conditions, amid increased activity among children, there has been a rise in visits for ENT conditions (+15%), asthma (+18%), isolated fever (+8%), gastrointestinal symptoms (gastroenteritis (+15%) among 2- to 14-year-olds and vomiting (+9%) among children under 2), and trauma (6%) among 2- to 14-year-olds. Among adults, there was an increase in visits for trauma among those aged 15–74 (10%) and for stroke (+12%) and malaise (+6%) among those aged 75 and older.
