Summary

In Week 23 (June 7–13, 2021), emergency department visits continued to rise among those aged 2–14 (+5%, or 3,793 visits) and those aged 15–74 (+3%, or 6,632 visits), and remained stable among those under 2 and those aged 75 and older. Hospitalizations following emergency department visits remained stable across all age groups.

Visits for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups, as well as their share of total activity, continued to decline in all age groups (-30%), with 1,879 visits and a 0.6% share of activity, respectively (vs. 2,674 visits and 0.9% in S22). The proportion of hospitalizations following visits across all age groups remains stable (51% vs. 52% in S22). At the regional level, visits for suspected COVID-19 are down in all regions except Réunion (+33%, or +22 visits). Since the start of surveillance on February 24, 2020, 498,943 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

The rise in seasonal indicators continues, particularly for hyperthermia and heatstroke (+100%, or +145 visits), insect bites (+42%, or +420 visits), conjunctivitis (+35%, or +465 visits), and allergies (+23%, or +575 visits) across all age groups, as well as for chickenpox in children under 2 years of age (+26%, or +21 visits). Also linked to weather conditions, there has been an increase in visits for isolated fever among children under 15 (+12%, or 315 more visits), for malaise (+6%, or 642 more visits), and for dehydration (+12%, or 36 more visits) among those 15 years of age and older.
