Summary

In week 26 (June 22–28, 2020), emergency department visits increased among children (+14%, or 7,349 visits) and adults under 75 (+7%, or 15,181 visits) and remained stable among those aged 75 and older. Regarding hospitalizations following emergency room visits, they increased by 9% among children.

Over the past week, the number of visits across all age groups for suspected COVID-19 remained stable in emergency departments (1,363 vs. 1,387 in Week 25). Among children, we observed the first week of increase in low numbers (+25 visits) after 5 weeks of decline. The share of COVID-19 visits across all age groups in total activity remains stable at 0.5%. The proportion of hospitalizations following visits is 36% (vs. 40% in Week 25 – consolidated data – stable). Regionally, of all visits for suspected COVID-19, 17% were recorded in Île-de-France, 15% in French Guiana, and 8% in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Since the start of surveillance on February 24, 2020, 170,088 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

Among other conditions seen in emergency departments, there has been an increase in visits for:

• ENT infections in children (+61%, or 754 visits);

• malaise in children aged 2–14 and adults aged 15–74 (+39%, or +116 visits, and +15%, or +833 visits, respectively);

• fever alone in children and adults (+25%, or 396 visits, and +11%, or 142 visits);

• trauma (+12%, or +7,794 visits) among 2- to 14-year-olds and 15- to 74-year-olds;

• dehydration among adults in small numbers.
