Summary

In Week 47 (November 18–24), total emergency department activity continued to rise among children (+10%, or +8,727 visits) and remained stable among adults. Hospitalizations following emergency department visits also increased among children, particularly among those under 2 years of age (+14%, or +472 hospitalizations).

Over the past week, the main trend observed was an increase among children:

  • bronchiolitis in children under 2 years of age (+42%, or +884 visits). An epidemic has been declared in 8 regions (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Brittany, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Guadeloupe, Martinique), and 5 other regions are in the pre-epidemic phase.

  • acute bronchitis (8%, or +40 visits), pneumonia (+23%, or +140 visits), ENT conditions (+13%, or +1,287 visits), and asthma attacks (+17%, or +405 visits);

  • abdominal pain (+10%, or +362 visits) and vomiting (+18%, or +106 visits) in children aged 2–14,

  • malaise (+16%, or +95 visits) and neurological problems (+17%, or +121 visits),

  • trauma among 2- to 14-year-olds (+11%, or +2,175 visits).

There was also a moderate increase in visits for influenza/flu-like illness among children (+30%, or +56 visits) and those aged 15–74 (+12%, or +41 visits)
