The Effectiveness of Plain Cigarette Packaging on Female Smokers in France: A Study in a Real-World Setting.

Background: This study is the first in France to explore the impact on female smokers of plain cigarette packaging combined with large visual health warnings in a real-world setting. Method: 142 occasional and daily female smokers (aged 25–40) used plain cigarette packs bearing the name of their usual tobacco brand for 10 days. Before and after using the plain packs, they were asked to complete two questionnaires to assess their reactions to the “traditional” cigarette pack and the plain pack. The questions asked focused on perceptions of the packs and cigarettes, feelings related to smoking, smoking in front of others, health warnings, behaviors, and behavioral intentions. Results: Compared to a "traditional" pack, the plain pack is associated with less positive evaluations of the packaging, the brand, and the cigarettes it contains. Lower satisfaction with smoking and with smoking in front of others was also observed. Participants also reported a stronger desire to quit smoking, reduce their consumption, and seek information on quitting. However, no effect of the packaging on the credibility of health warnings or the perceived tar content of the cigarettes was observed. Conclusion: This study shows that, consistent with previous research on plain packaging, it influences female smokers’ reactions in a manner favorable to tobacco control policies.
