Deaths attributable to smoking. Updated estimates for 2023

In 2023, in France, smoking was responsible for more than 68,000 premature and preventable deaths. This figure represents 11% of all deaths recorded in 2023: 16% of deaths among men and 6% of deaths among women. Cancer is the leading cause of smoking-related deaths, accounting for 57% of estimated deaths. One-third of deaths from chronic respiratory disease and one in ten deaths from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease are attributable to tobacco. Hauts-de-France, Grand Est, and Corsica are the French regions with the highest burden of mortality attributable to smoking.
