A mass foodborne illness outbreak or a case of mass hysteria?

On December 6, 1996, in the early afternoon, 15 children from an elementary school in Charente-Maritime were taken by ambulance to the emergency department of the referral hospital due to pain and nausea. All of the children had eaten in the school cafeteria. The DDASS medical inspector was alerted by the hospital administration and then by the emergency room physician. An investigation was then launched. (adapted from the text).
