Heat Wave and Health Alert System. National Update as of July 3, 2019.

Key Points

  • The heat wave began on June 23 and ended on July 2. It affected 12 regions. Four departments were placed under a red alert for the day and night of June 28, for the first time since 2004.

  • 78% of the metropolitan population experienced at least one day under an orange heat wave alert, including 7% who experienced one day under a red alert

  • Analysis of emergency care visits indicates a marked increase in the composite health indicator tracked under the national heat wave management plan (iCanicule), with more than 600 daily visits over three consecutive days (June 27–29).

  • The vast majority of these emergency care visits were related to hyperthermia, which may have resulted from very high maximum temperatures combined with risky behaviors.
