Epidemiological Bulletin on Acute Gastroenteritis. Summary of the 2018–2019 Winter Surveillance.

Key Points

During the winter season, from week 47 of 2018 to week 16 of 2019:

  • The Oscour network recorded 135,031 visits to hospital emergency departments for GEA:

    • this represents 2% of all emergency room visits during this period

    • 58% of visits for acute abdominal pain involved children under 5 years of age

  • The 61 SOS Médecins associations reported 146,739 consultations for acute respiratory infections, representing 8.6% of consultations during the period

  • The Sentinelles Network reported:

    • 10,148 cases of acute diarrhea, corresponding to an estimated cumulative incidence rate of 2,982 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [2,918; 3,046])

    • the most affected age group was 0–4 years, with an incidence rate of 8,655 cases per 100,000 children aged 0–4 years (95% CI [8,198; 9,112])

  • The norovirus genotype G.II.16/II.4 was predominant during the winter of 2018–2019, followed by genotype GI.1
