Winter Illnesses: A Dynamic and Accessible Way to Track the Spread of Respiratory Viruses

Influenza, bronchiolitis, COVID-19—our acute respiratory infection surveillance bulletin has been revamped. Discover its new format, which offers simplified and dynamic access to national and regional data via our Odissé open data platform.

Acute Respiratory Infections: What You Need to Know

Every winter, respiratory viruses cause outbreaks such as the flu, bronchiolitis, and COVID-19. These infections, which are exacerbated by cold weather and indoor gatherings, particularly affect vulnerable populations: older adults, infants, and people with chronic illnesses. Santé publique France conducts continuous, multi-source surveillance of these infections, which is stepped up during the winter season in France.

Why this change?

Starting with the 2026–2027 winter season, Santé publique France is modernizing its weekly surveillance bulletin to meet the growing need for accessibility, interactivity, and responsiveness in the analysis of acute respiratory infections (ARIs).

The goal: to simplify data access while offering an enhanced user experience through a dedicated page on Odissé. This change is part of an effort to promote transparency and real-time knowledge sharing.

What’s Changing for You

A streamlined and focused format

  • The weekly bulletin will be shorter, featuring a summary of key points, national alert maps by region, epidemiological analyses, and prevention messages.
  • Detailed indicators will no longer be included directly in the bulletin but will be accessible with a single click from the Odissé platform.

Dynamic access on Odissé

The new page dedicated to acute respiratory infections will allow you to:

  • Directly access national and regional data, updated weekly
  • Compare epidemic seasons to identify trends and developments.
  • Filter data by disease/pathogen (influenza, bronchiolitis, COVID-19, etc.) or by age group (children, adults, older adults)
  • Explore surveillance systems through interactive charts.

How can you access the new features?

  1. Go to Odissé and visit the page dedicated to acute respiratory infections (ARI).
  2. Explore the data using filters and comparison tools.
  3. Check out the weekly bulletin for a summary of trends and expert analyses.
