Sports and Health: Definitions and the Role of Sports Clubs

Physical activity, sports, organized sports (recreational or competitive), health-focused sports, wellness sports, and adapted physical activity for health: these are all ways to engage in activities that promote health, yet they are often poorly understood and not clearly distinguished from one another. In this context, a sports club can serve as a place of inclusion and a school of life where everyone acquires skills and greater control over their health—a social environment that contributes to the health and well-being of every participant. Many countries and international organizations are working to ensure that physical activity and sports are fully recognized as factors in physical and mental health.
