Heat Wave and Health in Corsica. Bulletin dated July 22, 2026.
Key Points
- The heat wave, which began on July 14, is still ongoing and will last at least until Wednesday, July 22.
- At the regional level, analysis of emergency department visits for the iCanicule composite health indicator shows the following during the heat wave:
- Stable emergency department visits throughout the heat wave period, with a situation comparable to the reference period, both for all age groups combined and for those aged 75 and older;
- No increase in the number of heat-related hospitalizations following a visit to the emergency room during the same timeframe;
- Very low activity at the SOS Médecins association in Ajaccio.
- It is important to note that an increase in heat-related indicators had occurred prior to the first episode (June 22–July 2). Since then, these indicators have remained at the same level. Given the sequence of these two episodes and the fact that extreme heat remains a significant health risk, it is important not to wait until a significant change in health indicators is observed before implementing the preventive measures recommended by the national heat wave management plan.
