Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of August 21, 2014.
Mortality: The all-age mortality rate recorded during week 33 is in line with expected values for this period; the number of deaths among people aged 75 and older has increased slightly (data will be finalized next week).
Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations: The number of emergency room visits among children under 1 year of age is within expected ranges for this period; emergency room visits among those aged 75 and older remain below expected levels.
Notifiable Diseases (ND) No unusual situation; 4 cases of Legionnaires’ disease and 4 cases of foodborne illness reported in August.
Chikungunya and dengue: enhanced surveillance Since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde—where the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is established—95 suspected cases have been reported.Among these, 36 cases of chikungunya, 16 cases of dengue, and 1 co-infection have been confirmed, all of which were imported. To date, no locally acquired cases have been identified.
Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE)Low activity in Aquitaine; increase in cases among children under 15 in France.
Asthma and AllergiesAsthma activity on the rise according to SOS Médecins in Aquitaine; an increase has also been observed at the national level. Allergy indicators are relatively stable or declining. Forecast: low allergy risk in Aquitaine.
Heat-related illnesses: Low activity according to Oscour® and SOS Médecins in Aquitaine. No heatwave forecast by Météo France.
Enterovirus meningitis: The virus has been circulating in Aquitaine since week 26, according to Oscour® and the virology department at Bordeaux University Hospital.
